Perfect Timing for Trips that Matter

When it comes to planning a trip, it’s good advice to start planning sooner rather than later. Planning earlier offers better availability and may offer better rates or packages. Booking flights earlier can also save you money, especially with the way flight prices have been recently! And having more time to plan means you don’t have to hurry through the booking process - when availability is limited or flight prices are creeping up, it’s easy to feel rushed into booking your trip and not thinking everything through.

Planning in advance also gives you something to look forward to! Even if your big trip is a year away, you can still start getting excited about what’s to come - whether it’s researching or reading up on the destination on your own, buying necessary gear, or working with a travel advisor who can help you plan extras along the way. Timing can make all the difference in your travel experience, so let's explore the best times to plan your trips.

Honeymoons

  • Plan at least 9-12 months ahead, especially for popular destinations.

  • Opt for off-peak seasons or shoulder seasons for fewer crowds and lower prices.

  • Think Bali in May or October, the Amalfi Coast in September, or the Maldives in November.

Safaris

  • Safari lodges often fill up 6-12 months in advance, so early planning is key (think 12-18 months!).

  • Talk to your travel advisor about animal migrations and climate for prime viewing, based on what you are most interested in seeing.

  • Serengeti in June or October, South Africa's Kruger National Park in July, or India's Ranthambore National Park from October to June.

  • Northern Lights:

    • Start your planning at least 9-12 months ahead for best availability

    • Optimal time to see the lights is October-March (with peak viewing in January-March).

    • Ideal time to visit: November to March during the Antarctic summer when temperatures are more moderate, and wildlife is abundant.

  • Japan

    • Book your trip 6-9 months ahead for cherry blossom season and popular festivals.

    • Ideal time to visit: Cherry blossom season in April, or the autumn foliage in October and November are fantastic.

  • Australia / New Zealand:

    • Plan your visit 6-12 months in advance, especially for popular cities and attractions.

  • Machu Picchu:

    • Secure your permits and tours 6-8 months ahead to get your preferred dates.

    • Ideal time to visit: The dry season, from May to September, offers the best weather and visibility.

  • Most cruise lines post their new schedules two years in advance which means you can plan way ahead! Cruise lines will also offer promos and packages when you book early.

Seasonal Trips

  • Holiday Travel: Book 3-6 months before your holiday dates to secure affordable fares and optimal availability.

  • Spring Break: Plan 3-6 months in advance.

  • Summer Travel: At least 2-4 months before your desired travel dates - if you are thinking about Europe, would suggest 6-9 months (or earlier)!
