Whether or not you like Valentine’s Day, you can beat a romantic escape with your loved one (even if that loved one is yourself!).

We plan many anniversary and couples trips, and it’s so much fun to brainstorm new ideas for places couples can travel to that aren’t the most obvious destinations. Here are just a few ideas to inspire your next romantic getaway…

Alaska

Alaska may not seem like the most romantic destination at first glance, but if you and your sweetie are the adventurous type and enjoy getting outdoors, this may be ideal for you. 

Imagine sleeping under the stars in your own cozy, yet luxurious, igloo with the opportunity to see the Northern Lights from your bed. Spend the day unwinding in the spa or getting outdoors on a dog sledding trip through the nearby forest. Indulge in delicious food and wine in the evenings before curling up under the stars once again. 

Now have I convinced you? 

Travel up to Fairbanks and its surrounding areas to stay in unique accommodations like Borealis Basecamp where you can experience all of this and more. The hotel offers seasonal activities throughout the year, though the best time to catch the Lights is late August to mid-April. If you’ve got extra time, consider a visit to Denali National Park or spend some time in Anchorage before heading home. 

Oaxaca, Mexico

Mexico offers plenty of intimate beach resorts that are excellent options for a romantic trip. But maybe sitting on the beach sipping margaritas is not what you have in mind? 

For those who love food (and drinks), travel to Oaxaca, known for its excellent food (try the mole or the tlayudas) and mezcal. Oaxaca is a UNESCO-designated World Heritage site, home to  ancient Zapotec ruins including Monte Alban, indigenous cultural heritage, colonial architecture, and more. Visit the local art museums and shop the small boutiques featuring handmade textiles made by local artisans. 

Stay in one of the intimate boutique hotels in Oaxaca City such as Otro Oaxaca or Pug Seal Oaxaca. And there are beaches along the coast of Oaxaca in case you get the urge to relax on the sand! 

You’re just an hour away from Mexico City so why not add on a few nights in another Mexican foodie paradise?

Croatia

Croatia keeps popping up as one of the most popular destinations right now and we have received two honeymoon requests already this year for this beautiful country. It’s fantastic for a couples trip whether you want to relax, have delicious food and wine, stay active, or perhaps do all of the above. We recommend traveling around the Dalmatian Coast, beginning in Split and ending in Dubrovnik. It’s easy to spend 7 days or 15 days on this kind of itinerary soaking up the sun and taking in the views of the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea. Spend a day chartering a boat and traveling out to Vis or the Pakleni Islands. Immerse yourself in the local culture with a full day wine and food experience in Korcula or Hvar (or add on e-bikes for a little more action)!

Paris & Champagne

Why not travel from Paris to Champagne? In less than 2 hours you can find yourself in the famous wine region known for its sparkling wine and impressive cheateaux. Spend a few nights at one of the beautiful hotels here, from the Royal Champagne Hotel to Chateau Les Crayeres, an historic chateau with modern touches.
