Traveling with a family of six isn’t easy.
It’s no surprise that we’ve been planning some amazing summer adventures for families of this size recently - Mom and Dad don’t want to do the planning, the kids have lots of opinions, and the destinations are unknown and unfamiliar.
These are the perfect conditions for calling your favorite travel advisor (that’s me!). I love helping families craft these incredible trips that will have a lasting impact on them for years to come. And it’s a reminder that family travel doesn’t have to be theme parks and all-inclusive resorts - taking your family on a true adventure can be so life-changing for everyone.
Here are some ideas to inspire your own family trip:
Exploring Japan
Ready to take your kids on the ultimate trip to engage their senses and indulge their curiosity (and yours)? Japan is a wonderful family destination and has so much to offer kids and adults. Working with our preferred partner, EXO Travel, we created an itinerary for a family of six that delivered on what the kids wanted to experience and offered a fun way to learn about local culture. This trip was designed for kids ages 9-13.
In Tokyo, tour the charming district of Asakusa before visiting Akihabara, the neighborhood known for being the center of Tokyo’s gaming, anime, and manga culture.
Dine in one of the themed cafes and have dinner at a traditional teppanyaki restaurant
Learn how to make character bento boxes based on Totoro
Experience the Shinkansen, the famous bullet train
In Kyoto, learn the art of Taiko drumming and Samurai kenbu (sword dance)
Visit Nara and see the famous sacred deer and local shrines
And throughout the trip, local guides and drivers will introduce you to the Japanese culture and ensure you are taken care of along the way
Adventure in Belize
Perhaps you are looking for some adventure with your older kids (22+) while balancing relaxation for yourself? And making sure your trip is friendly enough for 7 year old to enjoy? The idea for this trip started in the Caribbean and found its way to Belize where we were able to put together a 7-night itinerary with 3 nights on land and 4 nights at sea.
On land, stay near the famous Blue Hole National Park and have time to visit ancient ruins and go tubing in nearby caves
Then charter a sailboat for your family that comes with its own crew (no sailing experience needed!).
Sail around Belize’s cayes with the option to stop for local restaurants, shopping, and exploration.
Onboard, enjoy access to snorkeling equipment and paddleboards to use as you like, while also having all meals prepared for you and a ship bar for your happy hours.
Seeking Thrills in Alberta
For a different kind of active adventure trip, head north to Canada and see some of the most beautiful national parks our neighbor has to offer. This itinerary is designed to keep the family of five busy with thrilling excursions and the chance to see local wildlife and stunning scenery.
After flying into Calgary, rent a SUV and drive to Banff, a place of stunning scenery, ample wildlife and tranquil nature. With activities fit for every age and interest, try whitewater rafting, canoeing,horseback riding, hiking, zip lining or biking.
A trip up the Banff Gondola reveals panoramic views at over 7,500 feet above sea level.
Take a Beautiful ebike ride to Sundance Canyon, followed by a scenic hike led by a local guide
Join in on an early evening Big Canoe tour and learn fun facts about animal habitats, behaviors, and conservation. Paddle up the scenic Bow River while keeping your eyes peeled for some of the locals - bald eagles, elk, muskrats.
Watch the sunrise at stunning Lake Louise before traveling on to the Kananaskis River for rafting
Drive up to Jasper, stopping at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Park to see the Athabasca glacier
Go rafting and rock climbing in and around Jasper
