Cities We Love: Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a must-visit on anyone’s first trip to Thailand.

The city stands in stark contrast to Bangkok, and offers a different  point of view (literally) than what you’ll see on the islands. Chiang Mai is located in Northern Thailand, up in the mountains. The city is quite large, and the central Old City is a large square surrounded by tall stone walls. Inside the Old City, you’ll find temples at every corner, bustling night markets nearly every night, and a relaxed vibe that makes Chiang Mai popular with all kinds of travelers. I spent a full week soaking up this city and its surrounding area, and I would be happy to spend another full week there upon return! There’s something about Chiang Mai that lures people in and I look forward to getting back there soon!

Most of the luxury properties are outside of the Old City walls, though some are closer to town than others.

You’ll find retreats higher in the hilltops if you really want to get away from it all, or you can stay closer to the city but still in a peaceful environment.

Consider:

  • Wellness is the focus at Aleenta Retreat - efforts towards sustainability and living holistically await you in this luxurious 5-star resort.

  • Tranquility just outside of the Old Town is what you find at the Anantara Chiang Mai. Its location along the Mae Ping River offers a bit of quiet, but you can also choose to float down the river in the hotel's luxurious river cruise.

  • For the ultimate sanctuary nestled among the rice terraces, choose the Four Seasons Chiang Mai. This is a destination for wellness, relaxation, fine dining, and active exploration - whatever you are seeking.

If it’s your first time in Chiang Mai, there are a few primary attractions and activities you’ll want to include on your itinerary:

  • Explore the glittering temples of the Old Town by day and stroll the night markets in the evening.

  • Travel just outside the city to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of the area’s most famous temples set high on a mountain. Not only the views are amazing; the temple is very beautiful and worth spending some time. It’s considered the most important temple in Chiang Mai.

  • Visit an elephant sanctuary to learn more about the practice around rescuing the elephants and have an opportunity to interact with these majestic animals. It’s an incredible experience! We work with our partners to make sure you’re paired with a reputable sanctuary.

  • Also consider going trekking in the mountains surrounding Chiang Mai or exploring the waterfalls in the area with a guide. With all the wellness vibes surrounding you, you might also be inspired to do some yoga or treat yourself to a massage (or three!)

Planning your trip

Chiang Mai is ideal to include in your Thailand itinerary along with Bangkok and perhaps with one or more of the country’s beautiful beach destinations like Koh Samui or Phuket. If you want to focus your time in Northern Thailand, definitely add on Chiang Rai and perhaps head into Laos from there, traveling to another city we love, Luang Prabang. It’s also possible to spend most of your time in Chiang Mai - I stayed there for six days and many people enjoy staying for a while. If you're thinking about a wellness retreat or just some much needed relaxation time, this is the place to come. Best of all, you can work with us to craft your ideal trip to Chiang Mai!
