Lots to Love in Lyon

Lyon is France's third largest city, but it still feels a bit like a hidden gem nestled in the heart of France. With its rich heritage, culinary excellence, and breathtaking landscapes, Lyon promises an unforgettable experience for travelers. 

Lyon is considered the capital of cuisine - in a place like France, that means the food must be incredible. And that is certainly a primary reason to visit - but it's not the only one! I fell in love with Lyon on my first visit and quickly returned for a longer stay two months later.  In some ways, it feels like a smaller version of Paris but it also feels much friendlier and relaxed. It's small, but not too small which makes it relatively easy to get around. Lyon is nowhere near the sprawling size of Paris which makes it perfect for a few nights' stay, perhaps at the Intercontinental Hotel Dieu located along the Rhône in the center of town and near many of the best shops and sights. Or stay at one of the beautiful Virtuoso properties in Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) - La Villa Florentine and Cour des Loges - which are certain to charm you. 

One of my favorite things about Lyon is that it's a perfect city for a Flâneur (a stroller or saunterer). Find a neighborhood and explore (but beware of the hills!).

A Foodie Paradise:

Lyon boasts over 4,000 restaurants, including 20 Michelin starred establishments. Some of the most traditional French dishes were born here in Lyon - savor the traditional Lyonnais dishes like Coq au Vin, Quenelles de Brochet, and Rosette de Lyon. And sample the Andouillette sausages if you're serious about trying the local flavors. It’s easy to eat very well in Lyon, and it doesn’t always have to be very expensive.

There is a focus on locally sourced ingredients and using ALL parts of the animal in the cooking. It’s a place where you can be adventurous while you eat…but you may also want to consult your server before ordering if you don’t fully understand the menu.

Visit a bouchon, local restaurants where you can get the city’s traditional dishes typically served as a 3-course meal (Menu Lyonnaise). Be forewarned - these bouchons are not usually vegetarian friendly! 

Renowned chef Paul Bocuse opened his restaurant just outside of the city and I highly recommend securing a reservation if you're seriously into food (and French food). Many of today's greatest chefs got their start there (like Daniel Boulud). I went for a tasting dinner (solo) and had one of the most amazing dining experiences of my life!

Architectural Marvels

Lyon's architectural wonders seamlessly blend ancient and modern influences. Explore the UNESCO-listed Vieux Lyon, Europe's largest Renaissance neighborhood, characterized by cobblestone streets, Gothic cathedrals, and charming traboules (secret passageways - take a walking tour to experience these!). Visit the stunning Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, perched atop Fourvière Hill, offering panoramic views of the city. And be sure to stroll across the picturesque bridges over the Rhône and Saône rivers, admiring the city's stunning skyline. Even better? Grab a few items at the farmers market nearby (best visited on weekends), pop open a bottle of wine, and spend some time people watching along the Saône.

Natural Beauty

Lyon is not just a city; it's a gateway to breathtaking natural landscapes. Embark on a short trip to the charming villages and vineyards of Beaujolais or explore the majestic beauty of the Alps, located just a few hours away. Outdoor enthusiasts will relish hiking and biking through the nearby Monts du Lyonnais, offering stunning vistas of rolling hills and picturesque countryside.  

And, right in the city, is the beautiful Parc La Tete d’Or. This is the largest urban park in France and quite possibly my favorite city park. Anywhere. I love it more than Central and Prospect Park (and that’s saying a lot). There’s a botanic garden, a place for boating, a zoo, and beautifully manicured areas. It’s not a far walk from Presqu’île or Croix Rousse and worth some time to stroll around!

Arts & Culture: 

Culture aficionados will be enthralled by Lyon's vibrant arts and cultural scene. Discover the Musée des Beaux-Arts, housing an impressive collection spanning from antiquity to contemporary art. Attend a world-class opera or ballet performance at the renowned Opéra de Lyon. And every two years, Lyon transforms into a dazzling spectacle during the Fête des Lumières, where the city illuminates with enchanting light installations (coming up this December).
