Inside a Client's Trip: Three Weeks Through Slovenia's Lakes, Istria's Coast & Venice

Every so often, a trip comes across my desk that reminds me exactly why I do this work.

This one was a milestone anniversary — two weeks, three countries, and a route I'd happily take myself: the Julian Alps of Slovenia, the sun-warmed coast of Istria, and Venice as the finale. It's the kind of itinerary that sounds ambitious on paper and feels effortless in practice, which is really the whole point of working with an advisor instead of stitching it together yourself.

Here's how it unfolded — and a few things we're already tucking away for the next couple who books this route.

Slovenia: a city, then a total change of pace

They flew into Venice, where we arranged VIP airport service for the landing, and they told me afterward it was an absolute gamechanger, the kind of thing they'd recommend to anyone flying into Venice. After getting through customs quickly, they met their private driver to make the transfer into Slovenia. The trip’s first few hours were spent watching the scenery change rather than sitting in an airport taxi queue. The trip opened in Ljubljana, a city built for wandering. It's compact and walkable, with a hilltop castle worth the climb and a restaurant scene good enough that reservations need to happen well before you land (our local partner Luxury Slovenia stepped in to secure a fantastic last-minute table on night two — this is exactly the kind of thing a great on-the-ground network is for). Between the castle, the riverside cafés, and the nearby cave systems worth a full day on their own, Ljubljana earned its spot as more than a layover.

Then, forty-five minutes later, an entirely different world: Lake Bled. The pace drops the second you arrive. Three days here felt just right — long enough for a guided hike through the Julian Alps (our clients raved about the local guide we arranged: sharp, well-paced, and knew exactly when to talk and when to let the view do the talking), a quiet morning at Lake Bled's island church before the day-trippers arrive, and dinner at the storybook Bled Castle Restaurant, perched above the lake for a first-night view that's genuinely hard to describe secondhand.

From Bled, a short drive delivers you to Lake Jasna— quieter, wilder, and arguably even more beautiful. Our clients called it a completely different environment from Bled, and it's easy to see why: think glassy water at the foot of the mountains, a swim before lunch, and an intimate boutique stay at Hotel Milka. If anything, they wished they'd blocked out one more day here. Noted, for next time. If a mountain-lake stretch like this is calling to you, let's start planning your version

Istria: the trip exhales

After the Alps, Istria is where the itinerary shifts from scenery to indulgence. The welcome at Meneghetti Wine Hotel set the tone immediately — the kind of five-star arrival that makes you exhale before you've even unpacked. Days here were built around the grounds, the spa, and a beach club a short ride away. And because it’s a Virtuoso property, our clients arrived to welcome champagne and enjoyed complimentary breakfast each morning from their room.

But the unmistakable highlight was Rovinj. We arranged a private boat excursion along the coast — a great captain, fresh food served right on board, built specifically around their pace and interests — became an unforgettable moment of an already incredible trip. They described Rovinj itself as a "mini Dubrovnik," with better shopping and a livelier food scene than the smaller coastal towns nearby. Frankly, they could have used one more day just to wander it properly. We're already building that into the next version of this trip. Curious what a coastal week like this could look like for you? I'd love to talk it through

Venice: the grand finale

No itinerary through this part of Europe should skip Venice (besides, it’s ideal for flying in and out of this region), and this one closed there in style. The Londra Palace, just steps from San Marco, delivered the kind of views and warm, attentive staff that make a final stop feel like a proper finale rather than an afterthought. As a Virtuoso hotel, breakfast and a hotel credit came standard - a nice touch for their final nights away. On the concierge's recommendation, our clients enjoyed cocktails at Hotel Gabrieli’s recently renovated rooftop a few minutes' walk from the square, with the kind of golden-hour view that photographs itself.

What we're already refining

Part of what makes working with an advisor different from booking a trip yourself is that every trip teaches us something we bring to the next one. From this itinerary, we're already building in an extra buffer day around Ljubljana (weather and reservations are easier with breathing room), stretching Lake Jasna to two full nights minimum, and adding a second day in Rovinj so it gets the time it deserves. That's the quiet value of a personalized itinerary: it gets better every time, and you never have to be the one keeping track.

Is this trip for you?

This route is built for travelers who want more than one kind of beauty — the hush of an Alpine lake, the ease of a coastal boat day, the romance of Venice at golden hour — without the whiplash of planning it themselves. This is an excellent introduction to a part of Europe that's still wonderfully under-visited compared to its neighbors.

If a trip like this has been living on your someday list, let's talk about what your version could look like.
